Welcome! We’ve put together a list of some of the most commonly asked Self Employment Insurance questions to help you get enrolled in a TN health Insurance plan. Not all plans are available in every zip code, so you’ll need to begin by entering your information.
If you run an income-generating business and do not have any employees, then you’re considered self-employed (not an employer) and can get marketplace coverage. If you pay independent contractors as non-W-2 workers, you still qualify as self-employed. If you are unsure whether your workers are independent contractors or employees, we recommend visiting Self Employed vs Independent Contractor list and/or consulting with one of our agents before making any decisions for your business.
If you are self-employed, you may be eligible to utilize some premium deductions for your health insurance, along with dental and qualifying long-term care. Self-employed people will often qualify for an Advanced Premium Tax Credit as seen below.
An Advanced Premium Tax Credit allows you to receive the premium credit each month, rather than waiting to receive the credit when you file your taxes the next year. You may be eligible for the tax credit if you meet the following criteria:
If your income falls within the following ranges you’ll generally qualify for a premium tax credit. The lower your income is within these ranges, the bigger your credit.
The difference for self-employed health insurance is really the difference between being self-employed and an employer. If you have employees (generally, workers whose income you report on a W-2 at the end of the year), you’re considered an employer or a small business. If that is the case, you can get coverage for yourself and your employees through the marketplace.
You can’t be denied coverage or charged more because you have a pre-existing health condition. HealthTN can help you compare important features of several plans side-by-side, all of them offering a full package of essential health benefits. You can see what your premium, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs will be before you decide to enroll.
