Self Employment Health Insurance Questions

How do I know if I’m self-employed in Tennessee?

If you run an income-generating business and do not have any employees, then you’re considered self-employed (not an employer) and can get marketplace coverage. If you pay independent contractors as non-W-2 workers, you still qualify as self-employed. If you are unsure whether your workers are independent contractors or employees, we recommend visiting Self Employed vs Independent Contractor list and/or consulting with one of our agents before making any decisions for your business.

How can I lower costs for Self-Employed Health Insurance?

If you are self-employed, you may be eligible to utilize some premium deductions for your health insurance, along with dental and qualifying long-term care. Self-employed people will often qualify for an Advanced Premium Tax Credit as seen below.

What is an Advanced Premium Tax Credit?

An Advanced Premium Tax Credit allows you to receive the premium credit each month, rather than waiting to receive the credit when you file your taxes the next year. You may be eligible for the tax credit if you meet the following criteria:

  1. Have health insurance through the Health Insurance Exchange/Marketplace (easily facilitated by one of our Tennessee Health Insurance Agents)
  2. Are ineligible for coverage through an employer or government plan
  3. Cannot be claimed as a dependent by another person
  4. Do not file a Married Filing Separately tax return (unless you meet the criteria in Notice 2014-23, which allows certain victims of domestic abuse to claim the premium tax credit using the Married Filing Separately filing status for the 2018 calendar year)
  5. Meet the following income limits:

If your income falls within the following ranges you’ll generally qualify for a premium tax credit. The lower your income is within these ranges, the bigger your credit.

  1. $11,490 to $45,960 for individuals
  2. $15,510 to $62,040 for a family of 2
  3. $19,530 to $78,120 for a family of 3
  4. $23,550 to $94,200 for a family of 4
  5. $27,570 to $110,280 for a family of 5
  6. $31,590 to $126,360 for a family of 6
  7. $35,610 to $142,440 for a family of 7
  8. $39,630 to $158,520 for a family of 8

What is the difference between being self-employed and a Small Business?

The difference for self-employed health insurance is really the difference between being self-employed and an employer. If you have employees (generally, workers whose income you report on a W-2 at the end of the year), you’re considered an employer or a small business. If that is the case, you can get coverage for yourself and your employees through the marketplace.
