This week marks the first week of effective coverage under The Affordable Care Act (also known as ‘Obamacare’). So far, over 1.1 Million Americans have signed up for the January 1, 2014 effective date for healthcare coverage. If you are a Tennessean with new insurance for the New Year, you need to know a few things before using your new Marketplace Coverage.
Making sure you’re covered
If you think you’ve signed up for health insurance but haven’t heard from your insurance company, there are a few things you can do to find out if you’re covered.
If you haven’t received your insurance card
Even though you haven’t received your insurance card, your coverage may be effective. If you need to see a doctor or get a prescription filled before you get your insurance card, call your insurer to make sure you have coverage. You also can ask them to confirm your enrollment for your doctor or pharmacy so they can provide you care at the cost set by the health plan.

If you haven’t paid your first premium
Each insurer sets their own payment deadline. Some insurers may accept your first payment after your coverage has become effective or pay for your care retroactively. Contact your insurer to find out when you need to make your payment and what flexibility they are able to give you.
If your insurer doesn’t have a record of your enrollment
Call your agent at HealthTN at 1-888-599-3001 or call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 where a trained representative can assist you. If there was a problem with the Marketplace systems that prevented you from getting coverage even though you tried to enroll before December 23, you may be eligible to get coverage as soon as possible.
If you haven’t applied for coverage
If you haven’t yet applied for Obamacare in Tennessee, you have until March 31, 2014 to enroll. The next enrollment deadline for February 1, 2014 coverage, is January 15th. Please contact an agent at HealthTN at 1-888-599-3001 to get started today!
