For Tennesseans who select their health plan on the federal exchange site by the December 23, 2013 deadline will be able to pay their first month premium by January 10, 2014 and still have effective healthcare coverage by January 1, 2014.
Under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, Tennesseans must buy health insurance for 2014 or be faced with a fine. Many individuals have experienced massive technology problems with HealthCare.gov and in some other areas where states are running their own online exchanges. 36 states are running off of the federal exchange, HealthCare.gov and 14 states are running off their own exchanges and thus created the premium extension.
The government is urging insurers to allow individuals more time to pay their first month premium and to take measures such as extending the plan deadline so Tennesseans can get health care coverage effective January 1, 2014.
