Are you eligible for a Medicare Special Election Period in Tennessee?

You will be able to enroll or re-enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) or Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Coverage (MAPD) beginning on October 15 through December 7, 2016. Is it outside October 15th – Dec 7th and you need to update your Medicare Coverage? There are still options!

Good News! If we are outside of the 2016 Medicare Open Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage can be changed with certain circumstances. Changes such as losing your credible insurance coverage, create Special Election Periods or (SEPs). The rules about when you can make these changes and the kinds of changes you can make are different for each SEP, so please review carefully. Have your Special Election Period eligibility reviewed by one of our local tennessee agents specializing in Medicare and senior health insurance.

Have you moved or are you planning to move to a new address that isn’t in your current plan’s service area?

If you have, you may be able to switch to a new Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. By telling your current plan before you move, you may be able to switch plans beginning the month before you move. You will also have 2 full months after you move to make the switch. If you alert your plan after your move date, your chance to switch plans will being the month you tell your plan and last an additional 2 full months.

Have you moved to a new address where you have new plan options?

If so, you can change your Tennessee Medicare Advantage Plan or Tennessee Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. By telling your current plan before you move, you can switch plans beginning the month before you move. You will also have 2 full months after you move to make the switch. If you alert your plan after your move date, your chance to switch plans will being the month you tell your plan and last an additional 2 full months.

Have you recently moved back, or are you planning on moving back to the country?

If so, you are eligible to join a TN Medicare Advantage or TN Medicare Prescription Drug Plan! Your time to join lasts for two months after the month you move back to the United States.

Do you currently live in, just moved out of, or just moved into a Long Term Care Facility? (an example of this is a Skilled Nursing Facility

If so, You can:

  • Join a Tennessee Medicare Advantage Plan or Prescription Drug Plan.
  • Switch from your current plan to a different Tennessee MA (Medicare Advantage Plan) or Tennessee PDP ( TN Medicare Prescription Drug Plan)
  • Drop your current Medicare Advantage Plan and return to an Original Medicare Plan.
  • Withdraw from a Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plan)

This special election period is available to you as long as you lived at the institution or your SEP begins the month after you moved out of the facility and lasts for two full months after you move out of the facility.

Have you recently been released from Jail?

If so, you are eligible to join a TN Medicare Advantage Plan or TN Medicare Prescription Drug Plan! Your time to join begins the month you are released and lasts for two months after you are released from jail.

Are you no longer eligible for Medicaid Benefits?

Losing eligibility for medicaid benefits allows you to join or switch your TN Medicare Advantage or TN Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. You are eligible to drop your MA/PDP and return to Original Medicare. Your availability to change begins the month you are notified and lasts for two full months after you find out you are no longer eligible for Medicaid. If coverage is lost for the following year, your chance to change is from January 1 – March 31.

Have you left coverage from your employer or union (this includes COBRA coverage)?

You can join a Tennessee Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. The month you lose your coverage & two full months after the month your coverage ends to enroll in your new Medicare Plan.

Did you involuntarily lose other drug coverage that’s as good as Medicare coverage (The coverage must be creditable coverage), or your plan coverage changed and is no longer creditable?

If so, you can join a Tennessee Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. You have the month you lose coverage & two full months after the month your coverage ends to enroll in your new Medicare Plan. Your chance to join lasts a total of 3 full months beginning the month you lose your creditable coverage or the month you were notified that your current coverage is no longer creditable, whichever is later.

Have you left your Medicare Cost 1876 Plan?

You can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. You have the month you drop your cost plan and two full months after the month you drop your Cost Plan to enroll in your new Medicare Prescription Drug Plan

Have you dropped your coverage in a Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) plan?

If so, you are eligible to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Your chance to join begins the month you drop your coverage and lasts for two months after the month you drop your Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE, Plan.

Do you have a chance to enroll in other coverage offered by your employer or union?

If so, you may drop your current Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan and enroll in a private plan offered by your employer or union. You can do this whenever your employer or union allows you to make changes to your plan.

Are you enrolling in another drug coverage as good as Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (like Tricare or VA coverage)?

If so, you may drop your current Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan anytime.

Are you enrolling in a Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly? A “PACE” Plan?

If so, you may drop your current Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan at anytime to enroll in other creditable coverage.

At times, Medicare takes an official action (this is called a “Sanction”) because there is a problem with the plan. This will affect you.

If this occurs, you may switch from your Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another plan. This is determined on a case by case basis. If you think this may be you, it’s best to contact one of our Local TN Agents that specialize in Medicare plans.

What If Medicare terminates my plan’s contract?

If this occurs, you may switch from your Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another plan. Your chance to switch begins two months before and ends 1 month after the contract ends.

What if your Medicare Advantage, Medicare Prescription Drug or Medicare Cost Plan’s contract with Medicare isn’t renewed?

If this occurs, you may switch from your plan to another plan from during the normal open enrollment period.

If you are eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare

You are able to join, drop, or switch your Advantage Plan or Medicare Drug coverage plan at anytime. Start by Comparing Medicare Plan Costs.

I qualify for “Extra Help” to help paying my Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage costs.

You are able to join, drop or switch your Medicare Prescription Drug coverage plan at anytime. Your coverage will begin the first day of the month after you qualify for Extra Help and ask to join a plan. Would you like to speak to a one of our Licensed Agents about starting the process?

What if I am enrolled in Tennessee’s CoverRx or lose eligibility for Tennessee’s State Pharmaceutical Assistance Program?

You can join either a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage. This can be done once in a calendar year.

Is this your first time joining a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement policy for the first time?

If so, you can drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and enroll in Original Medicare. Your will have 12 months to drop your Medicare Advantage Plan after you join your MA plan for the first time. You will also have a special right to buy into a Medigap policy.

Do you have a severe or disabling chronic condition and there is a Medicare Chronic Care Special Needs Plan that will serve your condition. This is often called a Special Needs Plan or a SNP.

If you believe this describes your current situation, than you can join at any time.

Are you already enrolled in a Special Needs Plan and no longer have the condition or any condition that qualifies you for a Special Need Plan.

You may switch from a Medicare Special Needs Plan to a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Choosing this new plan can be done in the three full months from the time you lose your special needs status. Up to three months after your 6 month SNP’s grace period ends.

Have you joined a plan, or chose NOT to join a plan due to an error by a Federal Employee?

Once you have been given a notice of error from Medicare, you will have 2 months to: join, change or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage or/and a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

Do you believe you weren’t properly told that your other private drug coverage wasn’t as good as Medicare Drug Coverage? (Creditable Coverage)

If so, you could join a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan any time beginning the month you were notified and lasting two full months after you get a notice of error from Medicare or your plan.
