What if I have a pre-existing condition?

Great news! If you currently suffer from an existing medical condition, marketplace health insurance plans won’t be able to refuse to cover you or charge you more because you have a pre-existing health condition. Even if you have been refused coverage due to a pre-existing condition in the past, you will no longer be refused coverage relating to the treatment of that ailment. We always strongly recommend reviewing any plan you are considering with a licensed health insurance agent, but especially if you are considering coverage for a pre-existing condition. You are still required to pay deductibles, and choosing a wrong plan or one outside of your doctor’s network could cause unseen costs.

Grandfathered Individual Health Insurance Plans and Pre-existing Conditions

The only exception is for grandfathered individual health insurance plans–the kind you buy yourself, not through an employer. They do not have to cover pre-existing conditions. If you have one of these plans you can switch to a Marketplace plan during open enrollment and immediately get coverage for your pre-existing conditions. Or if you have had a qualifying life change you can see if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
